Training and first project!!

¿Habéis conseguido leer las frases de debajo de las fotos que puse ayer? Merece la pena leerlas aunque la verdad es que hay que dejarse un poco los ojos. 

Pues resulta que hoy había una reunión bastante numerosa de sex workers de otros distritos cercanos a Mysore y he reconocido a una de las chicas de las fotos, que es VIH +. Tiene un niño de 9 meses, que se ha pasado el día en la reunión, sin pañales by the way. Me pregunto si han conseguido evitar la transmisión del virus cuando nació. Y me pregunto qué hacen cuando el niño se hace pipí encima ... 

Total, que esta reunión y la de mañana es de formación. La comunidad de sex workers en este distrito es todavía pequeña y frágil. No es que promuevan la prostitución, sino más bien, el que se forme una comunidad de apoyo para todos los que quieran trabajar en esto, para protegerse unos a otros, para tener acceso a información y atención médica, etc. Una de las coordinadores de Ashodaya contaba como ella no necesitaba la orientación de nadie, ganaba 7000 Rupias al día, unos 115 €, que es más de lo que gastan muchos en un mes en total. Le iba muy bien, hasta que descubrió que era VIH +. Entonces no solo se metió en Ashodaya sino que trajo a todas sus amigas, para evitar más contagios entre otras cosas. La podéis ver en las fotos de ayer, se llama Lady PC Ratna.

Mucho de lo que se ha dicho hoy es lo que yo he ido aprendiendo durante las presentaciones particulares que me han hecho en estos días atrás. Y ya os lo iré contando. Hoy solo quiero destacar una vez más la profesionalidad de todos ellos, tanto los asistentes sociales y los de la administración como los sex workers de la comunidad (en cada presentación hay siempre sex workers). No conozco mucho el ambiente empresarial, pero estoy segura de que aquí son unos fantásticos líderes, capaces de agrupar y movilizar a miles de personas de varios estratos sociales y culturales, con poca educación en general, con problemas personales y psicológicos importantes, sometidos a muchas presiones. Y en unas condiciones limitantes. Cuando hablo de presentaciones en power point, no os imaginéis una sala como las nuestras ... solo hay un par de ordenadores, y la sala es muy agradable pero es de lo más escuetita. La electricidad se puede ir varias veces al día. Y aún así, yo me encuentro muy a gusto entre ellos. Mañana os mandaré fotos ... si me pasan alguna. 

Otra cosa importante: ya tengo un proyecto!! Sushena, la directora del programa, me pide que me meta en un trabajo que tienen que presentar en un organismo del gobierno, NACO (National Aids Control Organization), el 9 de octubre, si he entendido bien. Sería un resumen de todas las actividades de investigación y evaluación que se han realizado en Ashodaya. ¡Estoy super contenta! Ya empiezo a tener un proyecto donde espero poner mi granito de arena. 

Otros proyectos que tienen en mente van más hacia la divulgación del trabajo de Ashodaya, así que si alguno tiene ideas, que no se corte, que yo escucho! De momento, tienen un DVD sobre Ashodaya y quieren hacer un panfleto.

Did you manage to read the legends below the pictures that I posted yesterday? It’s a bit hard but it’s worth trying!

In fact, there was a big meeting today at Disha, the office close to my apartment. And I recognized one of the girls from the pictures. She is HIV + and she came with her 9 months old baby. I wonder whether they’ve managed to avoid the transmission of the virus to the child or not … and also what they do with babies not wearing any diapers at all. 

Anyway, this was a training meeting and those people were coming from neighboring districts, where the community of sex workers is still small and fragile. Please, don’t get me wrong: they are not promoting sex work but rather safe behaviors, awareness, a supportive environment to protect themselves, to get better medical attention, etc. One of the Ashodaya coordinators who was giving a talk (all talks are given in part by sex workers) was telling how she didn’t need any help at all. She was earning 7000 Rupees per day, which makes about 160 CAD $, more than what most people spend in the whole month. Things were going great for her until she found she was HIV +. Not only she joined Ashodaya but she also mobilized all her friends to join the program and try to avoid more infections. She is Lady PC Ratna in the picture from the wall that I posted yesterday.

Most of what was said today is what I’ve been learning in my private presentations these days back. So I will tell you more in detail later. Today I want to emphasize again that I find them really professional and committed, both the social workers and the community sex workers. I know very little about business things but I can tell that they are true leaders, able to mobilize and organize thousands of very different people under the same umbrella. People from all cultural and societal backgrounds, poor education in general, carrying heavy personal and psychological burdens, living under pressure. All this with limited resources, of course.  When I say “power point presentations”, you should not imagine it like our presentations. There are just a couple of computers in Disha, the power may simply be cut off, and the meeting hall is very nice but very humble. I feel very much at home though! I will hopefully send you pictures tomorrow.

One more important thing: I have a little project!! Sushena, the program director, suggested me to work in a dissemination study requested by NACO (National Aids Control Organization, Indian Government). It should be a summary of all research and evaluation projects carried out in Ashodaya so far. I am so happy to have a project to put my hands in, my heart and my mind.

Another project in the pipeline is to give Ashodaya more visibility, so if any of you have any suggestion, they are more than welcome. So far, they have a DVD and they plan to do a brochure. Time to free our creativity, right?
